Structure of Mycobacterium leprae.
Introduction : why study structure? Information about the structure of M. leprae may be obtained by microscopy (especially electron miscroscopy) and other physical techniques . There is active development of such techniques , but at present the information they can give about structures as complex as a bac terium is l imited . To obtain a detailed knowledge of the molecular composition and con...
متن کاملMycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepraemurium infections in domestic and wild animals.
Mycobacterium leprae, the aetiological agent of leprosy in humans, gives rise to a chronic granulomatous disease that affects primarily the skin and peripheral nerves, and secondarily some internal organs such as the testis and the eye; viscera are seldom involved. Depending on host resistance, leprosy may present as a benign disease (tuberculoid leprosy) or as a malignant disease (lepromatous ...
متن کاملComparative ultrastructure of Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepraemurium cell envelopes.
The structural properties of the cell envelopes of Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepraemurium were investigated by freeze-fracture, freeze-etching, and negative-staining techniques. Freeze-fracture split the cell wall and exposed the internal features of the peptidoglycolipid mycosidic filamentous network. The cell membrane was also split into two asymmetric faces. The external fractur...
متن کاملAdjuvant activity of Mycobacterium leprae.
Mycobacterium leprae organisms isolated from infected spleen and liver tissue by zonal centrifugation were shown to possess adjuvant activity. Histochemical examination of the footpad macrophage epithelioid granuloma showed that macrophages contained large amounts of hemosiderin after the injection of M. leprae and much smaller amounts after the injection of M. tuberculosis.
متن کاملMycobacterium leprae. A multifactorial approach
Evidence is accumulating that Mycobacterium leprae is probably a microbe dependent microbe. l O1 3 The first report that multiplication of M. leprae was promoted by a growth factor of mycobacterial origin was proposed by Twort l 9 in 1 9 1 0 , two years before the discovery of the cultivation of 'lohne's bacilli' in media enriched with heat-killed mycobacteria . 2o The growth factor was identi...
